Hey there,
I'd just like to throw my recommendation of Eve University out there. It's a very well established place for new players to learn a good bit of what the game has to offer, and is great for testing the water as it were, across a wide variety of what the game has to offer.
During my time in the uni, I've made good friends, seen a little action (though unfortunatly I tend to just miss a lot of fleets), learnt a lot and ultimately had a great time. Indeed the uni is great at catering for your needs, providing skillbooks for you when they cost less than 1-million-isk and giving you free Tech-1 ships and other goodies.
The only downside of the uni I have found is the constant wardecs it recieves. As you'd expect, a lot of people think we're going to be a very easy target, with a lot of new players, flying around in badly fitted beginner ships... However this generally isn't the case, as the uni has a lot of pilots who've been there for months or even years, these veteran pilots are able to guide the newer ones, and often provide the extra experience and firepower that the uni fleets need to do what they do, that is absolutely destroy the opposition.
The main problem with the wardecs though, has to be the lockdowns. They encompass almost all of what the game has to offer. No mining, no missioning, no exploration, no doing anything unless you're in a fleet and are going after war targets. Naturally this creates a lot of problems for some players, particularly the newer ones, who don't have any money saved up and now have no way of making money. Thankfully you're able to drop out of the corp and continue as you would were you not at war, but sill be allowed to participate in most of the uni's activities.
There are a lot of great pilots at the uni who are always willing to give you a helping hand whenever you struggle with something, and have the experience to do so. You're guaranteed to learn a lot there, and if you want to know more about a specific aspect of the game, there's nearly always a class on it, even if it only covers the very basics.
I hope all the new pilots out there will somehow find their way there and that they enjoy it as much as I have been.
Fly Safe,
Atsuma Yishami
